Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
