EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
