PSG Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger found the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired twice late to seize a surprise advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping decisive attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored successfully for PSG to seal a convincing penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
