Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
