The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
